Lyrics

Verse 1:
The letter was taped to the mirror
No one in the dressing room spoke
They just packed up their things, said goodbye with their tears
And there in the corner was Joe
He’d been here longer than all the rest
He snuck up the stairs after everyone left

Chorus:
Empty and old, standing alone upon the stage
Joe combs his hair but no one is there to see him now

Verse 2:
At nine years old he first painted his face
And danced for a quarter a week
Sixty years, and now he’s been replaced
By a picture that moves on a screen
Where is a man supposed to go
When he’s leaving behind all that he knows

Chorus:
Empty and old, standing alone upon the stage
Joe combs his hair but no one is there to see him now
But the shadows hold hands and Joe hears the band begin to play
And the echoes of cheers that came through the years rise from the ground
And his courage shakes as Joe turns and takes his final bow
